About

As the mask mandate comes to an end, we are now able to reveal our faces once again - do you feel relaxed, anxious or having mixed emotions showing your face? How do you feel seeing people's uncovered faces on the streets once again? There are many extended discussions related to body image including "Magikkun", which means the combination of mask and sagikkun, “as masks come off, anxiety sets in”, insecurities concerning appearance, and so on. Have you ever pondered and questioned the sources of your body image perspective?

Body image is a pervasive topic in our daily lives, with various forms of media and social media platforms placing a strong emphasis on visual content. The popular phrase "no photo no talk" reflects the importance of visual presentation in today's culture, whether it's through sharing #OOTD (outfit of the day) posts on social media or presenting one's face on a dating app in hopes of making a good impression. Reality shows such as "Single's Inferno" and "Pre-wedding" further highlight physical appearance, as cameras zoom in on contestants' bodies and faces in an effort to capture every single detail. In a world where faces and bodies are often the primary focus of our attention, discussions about body image and related issues have become increasingly prevalent and important.

Pop culture subtly shapes body image, while various trends such as body love and body neutrality spark important discussions. As we navigate through this changing landscape, understanding our own relationship with body image is a crucial step towards self-acceptance and positive self-image.

In this webinar, Vivian Tam, a CUHK School of Journalism and Communication lecturer, will discuss how mass media and pop culture impact our body image and influence our attitudes. The webinar will also explore ways to develop personal values and make independent decisions that prioritize self-care.

**The webinar will be held in Cantonese.
